Valmore Art Studio has always had a special appreciation for the work of Bruno Munari, considering him one of the most important artists of the 20th century, internationally, and the master of many later generations of artists.
The exclusive online exhibition creates a dialogue between Munari’s works and those of Annamaria Gelmi, focusing on research into the perception of forms, their transformation through movement and time, and the transition between different dimensions of space.
At the core of Munari and Gelmi’s research there is the relationship between spatial dimensions. The transition between the different dimensions of the plane and three-dimensional space through the involvement of the fourth temporal dimension becomes their design method. In fact, both start from a “geometric module” that evolves and transforms, and through movement generates seamlessly variable space-time dimensions.
Bruno Munari, 1907 | Annamaria Gelmi, 1943
Bruno Munari is definitely one of the crucial artists of the 20th century, internationally.
With overflowing creativity, he has worked in many fields, moving from graphic design to design (some of his pieces are world-famous), from the art world to publishing. According to Bauhaus thinking that promotes the integration of art and industry and unity and harmony among different artistic activities.
Munari participated at a very young age in Futurism, inventing the aerial machine (1930), the first piece of “mobile” in the history of art, and the useless machines (1933). In 1948 he founded MAC (Movimento Arte Concreta) together with Gillo Dorfles.
This movement theorizes a synthesis of the arts, capable of flanking traditional painting with new means of communication and able to demonstrate to industrialists and artists the possibility of a convergence between art and technique. Munari is also considered the pioneer of programmed and kinetic art, and he organized in 1962 the first exhibition of Programmed Art in Olivetti stores (Milan, Venice and Rome) with a catalog edited by Umberto Eco.
Annamaria Gelmi, active in the art world for over 55 years, she develops an artistic research strongly focused on the relationship between figure and space and the interaction between her works and the surrounding space. In the creation of her works, the repetition of a module and the attention to the play of shadows involve the eye in a complicity close to the constructive process of optical-kinetic art.
Geometric rigor, but elaborate and precise design of space, light, movement and involvement of the viewer bring Gelmi’s work closer to Constructivism, Minimal Art and Optical-Kinetic Art.
Gelmi uses many different materials, from canvas to acetate, wood, iron and steel, precious metals and glass, and makes works at different scales: from small-scale paintings to large-scale canvases, to installations to large-scale sculptures for environments (artificial and natural).
