The 38th edition of Officine CAOS season | Differenti Sensazioni | “CARNE” Frosini/Timpano (Roma) | Torino

1-CARNE – Frosini Timpano ph Piero Tauro

There is a point, in the secret geography of our impulses, where flesh stops being matter and becomes a question. A question that throbs, that demands, that cuts through us. We want to bite it, protect it, deny it, consume it. Flesh concerns us because it is what we are and what we fear: the place where instinct stumbles into ethics and desire brushes against violence. In this unstable territory, where nature and culture blur, Frosini/Timpano build Carne: a sharp duet that strips our contradictions bare with irony, precision, and a lightness that never absolves.

The 38th edition of Officine CAOS’s Differenti Sensazioni season continues by hosting one of the most radical and acclaimed duos in contemporary Italian theatre. For over fifteen years, Elvira Frosini and Daniele Timpano have crossed history, politics, and the collective imagination with a theatre that dismantles and overturns rather than narrates. With Carne, they return to interrogate the body as a symbolic, ethical, and cultural battleground.

“CARNE”

Frosini/Timpano (Rome)

A beast desired, feared, invoked. A beast to eat, to caress, to torture, to save. This is where Carne begins: from a primordial impulse that becomes language, from a desire that warps and multiplies. She and He argue, quarrel, provoke each other. She, vegetarian or perhaps vegan, driven by an antispeciesist thought that tries to dismantle the hierarchy between human and animal. He, a convinced carnivore, who accepts the “dialectic of blood” as a natural, inevitable, almost liberating principle. Comic dialogues alternate with quirky monologues, certainties crack, positions flip. We laugh, we recognize ourselves, we are challenged. Because flesh is not only what we eat: it is what we are, what we consume, what we let rot.

Critics have described the show as “an ironic and razor sharp device that turns an everyday theme into a field of political reflection.” In Carne we find the duo’s signature: a theatre that opens rather than explains, that exposes rather than judges, that uses laughter as a blade and language as a detonator.

In 2020 they received the UBU Award one of the most important recognitions in Italian theatre—for Gli sposi – Romanian Tragedy. Many other works, from Dux in scatola to Aldo morto, from Zombitudine to Acqua di colonia, have been awarded or selected in national festivals, confirming Frosini/Timpano as one of the most lucid and necessary presences in the contemporary scene.
