The 38th edition of Differenti Sensazioni continues its international journey by presenting VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE, a creation by the Latvian company Sixth, led by choreographer Vladimirs Goršantovs. The work moves through the genetic microuniverse and contemporary socio-political dynamics, questioning our ability, or inability, to escape the mechanisms that govern us, whether biological or cultural.

“VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE”
Sixth (Latvia)
Genes build, direct, encode, and influence. And they are transmitted. Their force is relentless, their drive unstoppable. Like silent architects, genes seek continuity in every living form, using organisms as survival machines to secure their legacy, whether good, harmful, or distorted.
VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE opens within this primordial terrain: a journey that begins with the most elementary components of the micromolecular world and evolves into the socio-political processes of the present, where competition, power games, and cheap emotions shape our choices. The madness surrounding us can no longer be explained by planetary alignments, zodiac constellations, karmic principles, divine punishments, or even shifts in atmospheric pressure. Perhaps it is simply our genetic predisposition that leads us toward forms of voluntary servitude, the same fascination we experience when we willingly let ourselves be possessed by cats.
The work bears the signature of Vladimirs Goršantovs, a choreographer nominated for the Dejas Balva, Latvia’s national dance award, and is created with the support of the State Culture Capital Foundation. The production is realized by SIXTH in co-production with Ģertrūdes ielas teātris, one of the leading institutions of the contemporary Baltic performing arts scene.

Goršantovs constructs a physical dramaturgy that alternates tension and irony, anatomical precision and surreal shifts. The dancers’ bodies become transmission devices, surfaces of conflict, organisms traversed by forces greater than themselves. A choreographic reflection that weaves together biology, philosophy, and social critique, while maintaining the aesthetic signature that characterizes contemporary Latvian performance.
