“Lise” is a theatrical creation by Paola Tortora dedicated to the extraordinary figure of physicist Lise Meitner (1878–1968), an Austrian Jewish scientist who played a decisive role in the discovery of nuclear fission, yet was denied the Nobel Prize.
The performance is a narrative of images, voice, and essential gestures, tracing Meitner’s life as an emotional and historical journey: racial persecution, sudden escape from Nazi Germany, work alongside the greatest scientists of the 20th century, the revolutionary discovery of fission, international secrecy, two world wars, the professional betrayal that excluded her from the Nobel, and the horror of atomic bombs — a crime she firmly condemned.
The text highlights the central themes of her existence: solitude, injustice, rebellion, scientific ethics, the conflict between power and knowledge, and a longing for peace. A poetic and powerful portrait emerges, restoring the wonder of a brilliant woman and her “49 missed Nobels.”
Founded and directed by Paola Tortora, Vintulera Teatro is a cultural association that explores Southern Italy’s theatrical tradition, the relationship between music, philosophy, and meditation, and immersive, participatory theatrical experiences. Paola Tortora is a multifaceted figure: actress, director, playwright, architect, trainer, and theatre educator. Her work stands out for its strong focus on the inner, poetic, and philosophical dimension of theatre.
