An exhibition that reactivates a collective gesture from 1977

Riprendiamoci il Rosso presents the new pictorial production by Gabriele Boccacini, artist and founder of Stalker Teatro, who returns to one of his earliest collective actions: the intervention carried out in 1977 in the Le Vallette district of Turin. At the time, one hundred cardboard boxes painted red were distributed throughout the neighborhood, inviting residents to post inside them fragments of materials of the same color. The collected contents were then assembled into a large flag composed of multiple shades of red, a symbol of spontaneous and shared participation.

Today, nearly fifty years later, Boccacini revisits that experience through painting: one hundred canvases depict the one hundred original boxes, each containing a painted fragment. In the hundredth painting, as in the original action, the fragments come together again in a unified mosaic. The exhibition thus offers a visual and permanent translation of an ephemeral gesture, restoring continuity to a collective imaginary rooted in the territory.

The critical contribution by Francesco Poli

The exhibition is accompanied by a critical text by Francesco Poli, art historian and critic, who situates Boccacini’s research within the framework of relational art and participatory practices developed from the 1970s to today. Poli highlights how the artist’s work fits into a genealogy that spans theatre, performance, visual arts, and social engagement, maintaining a constant focus on community dynamics and the transformation of shared space.

The exhibition path underscores the artist’s ability to move across different languages while preserving a strong conceptual coherence: relation, participation, and the transformation of social space.
